Are You Using Your Devices Too Much?

Technology is all around us – you are using it right now to read this article. Although on the whole it has made our lives easier and helped us to communicate with colleagues and loved ones it also has a downside.

Posture

Constantly using cameras, phones, computers and tablets can have a negative effect on our wellbeing and excessive social media interaction can increase depression and anxiety.

There’s also a physical downside. We spend so much time looking down at our devices that we could be doing damage to our spine and neck. There has been an increase in smartphone related injuries leading to pain and discomfort.

Sleep

Another effect is on our ability to get a good night’s sleep. When we sleep we regenerate – helping us to avoid heart problems, high blood pressure, strokes and even diabetes. Technology can interfere with our ability to get a good night’s rest due to the blue light that these devices emit, confusing our brain into whether its time to sleep or wake up. The solution is to avoid looking at our devices an hour before bed and avoid checking them overnight. Perhaps it’s time to invest in an old fashioned alarm clock?

Skin

Did you know that our smartphones can also affect our skin? It can cause acne, blemishes and wrinkles. Not only can the light be harmful, but we are transferring bacteria to our skin every time we use them. Make sure you clean your devices and don’t use them too much.

Sight

Finally, our devices could be damaging our eyesight. A condition called computer Vision Syndrome leaves sufferers with eye strain and blurry vision. The only way to avoid this is to limit your device usage.

Technology is still positive and life enhancing for many, but make sure you’re aware of the negative effects and limit your use!
