A Christmas Move
Moving home is a stressful time for all involved, but when you add Christmas into the mix it can make it even more difficult! However, there are things you can do to minimise the stress and strain of moving. Here are some tips for those of you that are moving home this Christmas and New Year.
Buy a newly built home
By purchasing a home from a developer rather than from a seller through an estate agent, you can save a lot of stress and upset. You aren’t in a chain, you don’t have to worry about a sale falling through further up the chain and potentially losing your dream home. When you reserve a new development, once the deposit is paid and providing you can fulfil the mortgage obligations, the property is a certainty! That just leaves you to take care of the job of moving without going back and forth to solicitors, surveyors and estate agents. What’s more, when you move in it’s freshly decorated, everything is new and in good working order.
Have a good clear out
We all hoard items over the years, so if you know you’re going to be moving soon, have a good clear out and get rid of anything you don’t want to keep. Now is the best time to do it! There are plenty of charity shops willing to take items of furniture and clothing and you could even set about selling items on eBay or Gumtree to help with the moving costs.
Pack away non essentials
Start to pack away anything you don’t need or use such as summer clothes, garden furniture and any kitchen items that you don’t use – such as BBQ items and summer crockery. The trick is to spread the job out over a period of time so you aren’t frantically trying to get everything done. Remember you’ll still want your home to be comfortable and cosy so don’t go overboard!
Get the boxes and labels ready
Make sure you have enough boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape so that you can get on with packing up what you don’t need. Use sturdy boxes and pack anything breakable with lots of bubble wrap! Once you’ve packed a box, label it clearly and store it properly so that it can be easily moved when the time comes. Group boxes by room so that it’s easier once you’re in your new home.
Book the removals company
Get your booking in as soon as you can – especially when moving over Christmas and New Year when many companies take time out and close up. You can always change the date but it’s best to have a booking in place.
Moving admin
Make sure you arrange your home insurance and removals insurance so that if anything breaks it’s covered! Also let your utilities company know that you are moving, arrange the transfer of your phone line, broadband and TV services. There’s nothing worse than moving in with no services or Internet!
Pack the essentials
Pack a bag of essentials such as food, tea, coffee, toilet roll, cleaning items, clean bedding, pyjamas, clothing and toiletries separately so you can get them when you need them. You don’t want to be searching through boxes on the day you move in order to brush your teeth and get ready for bed!
